Market Participants Recognise Corpay, Inc.'s (NYSE:CPAY) Earnings

Published
NYSE:CPAY

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider Corpay, Inc. (NYSE:CPAY) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 22.7x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Corpay certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Corpay's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

Corpay's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 12%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 56% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 17% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Corpay's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Corpay's P/E?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Corpay maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Corpay you should know about.
