QYLD Vs RYLD: Which Is The Better Buy?
The Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF and the Global X Russell 2000 ETF are passive ETFs that share many characteristics, most obviously, their very high distributions. The covered call strategy they follow may not be what investors expect. We explain it and show how market scenarios affect the gains and losses distributed as "dividends." The ETFs' differences stem from the indexes they write calls against. They have performed very differently in different kinds of market downturns. The Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF is probably the better choice of these two ETFs for long-term investors. But income investors will have better returns by investing in income ETFs that don't limit upside the way these ETFs do and hence preserve capital.
QYLD: Don't Cap Your Upside With This ETF
The Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF seeks to generate income by selling covered calls on NASDAQ stocks. The ETF has recently been paying a distribution of around 12%. Although selling covered calls can provide investors with income-like returns, this strategy also caps the upside that investors can make. A covered call strategy only provides a small buffer against bear markets and retains most of the risks of simply holding a long portfolio of the same stocks. Ultimately, I think most investors would be better served using individual stocks or another Nasdaq ETF like QQQM to write covered calls themselves.
Is QYLD A Good Choice For Dividend Portfolios? What To Make Of Its 14% Yield
Global X Funds - Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF is a tech investment that seeks to generate income primarily. The ETF offers a huge distribution yield deep in the double-digits and makes monthly payments. Despite a huge tech bull market since the ETF's inception, QYLD was not able to keep its NAV intact or to grow it. NAV declines could continue in the future.
Skip QYLD And Sell Covered Calls On QQQ Yourself
QYLD implements a buy-write strategy on QQQ. The path dependence of QYLD makes the performance unpredictable. Selling covered calls against QQQ is a better alternative. I analyze outcomes from a QQQ covered call position I wrote about a year ago.
QYLD: Year In Review, Generating Large Yield But Not ROI From Global X Covered Call ETFs
2021 has come to an end and I compare QYLD against the other Global X covered call funds RYLD and XYLD. I compare these funds in two methodologies - if an investor had reinvested each of the monthly distributions or taken the distributions as income. QYLD has the largest amount of net assets but it didn't win in either category and the details may surprise you.
QYLD: Volatility Spike And Widening Yield Spread Are Good News
This is an update to my previous coverage on the Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF published on Sept 11, 2021. The main updates are twofold: to discuss the implications of the recent volatility spike and QYLD’s widening spread yield against BAA bonds. The recent volatility spike reached a level to the top 95% percentile of its historical spectrum, and this can be good news for income generation by option selling. At the same time, the yield spread further widened since my last coverage and made the income aspect of QYLD even more attractive.
