Further Upside For EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 26% Bounce
EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 18% is also fairly reasonable.
Even after such a large jump in price, EZCORP may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.8x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 32x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
EZCORP certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like EZCORP's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. The longer-term trend has been no better as the company has no earnings growth to show for over the last three years either. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been satisfied with the complete absence of medium-term growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 14% per year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's peculiar that EZCORP's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On EZCORP's P/E
EZCORP's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
Our examination of EZCORP's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
