Planet Fitness' (NYSE:PLNT) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 22% in the last quarter. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 48%, less than the market return of 62%.
While the stock has fallen 4.0% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, Planet Fitness managed to grow its earnings per share at 19% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 8% over the same period. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. Of course, with a P/E ratio of 51.24, the market remains optimistic.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 4.2% in the last year, Planet Fitness shareholders lost 11%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 8% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
