Tuniu (NASDAQ:TOUR) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So on that note, Tuniu (NASDAQ:TOUR) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Tuniu is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.08 = CN¥82m ÷ (CN¥1.9b - CN¥847m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
Thus, Tuniu has an ROCE of 8.0%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Hospitality industry average of 10%.

So How Is Tuniu's ROCE Trending?
We're delighted to see that Tuniu is reaping rewards from its investments and has now broken into profitability. While the business is profitable now, it used to be incurring losses on invested capital five years ago. In regards to capital employed, Tuniu is using 70% less capital than it was five years ago, which on the surface, can indicate that the business has become more efficient at generating these returns. This could potentially mean that the company is selling some of its assets.
On a side note, Tuniu's current liabilities are still rather high at 45% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
Our Take On Tuniu's ROCE
In the end, Tuniu has proven it's capital allocation skills are good with those higher returns from less amount of capital. Given the stock has declined 69% in the last five years, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. That being the case, research into the company's current valuation metrics and future prospects seems fitting.
