PriceSmart, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PSMT) Share Price Not Quite Adding Up
When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider PriceSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ:PSMT) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 20.9x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
PriceSmart certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

PriceSmart's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 8.9% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen a 28% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 16% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 15%, which is not materially different.
With this information, we find it interesting that PriceSmart is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On PriceSmart's P/E
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of PriceSmart's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
