Century Communities, Inc.'s (NYSE:CCS) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%
Century Communities, Inc. (NYSE:CCS) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 29%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Century Communities' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.7x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 18x and even P/E's above 33x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Century Communities certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Century Communities' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.0% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 4.5% overall drop in EPS. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 7.1% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Century Communities is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Century Communities' P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Century Communities' P/E close to the market median. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Century Communities' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
