Verisk Analytics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:VRSK) P/E Still Appears To Be Reasonable
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.2x Verisk Analytics, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRSK) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 16x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Verisk Analytics has been very sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will turn things around completely and accelerate past most others in the market. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Verisk Analytics' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 6.0%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 35% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 16% per year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why Verisk Analytics is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Verisk Analytics' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
