The Market Lifts Concentrix Corporation (NASDAQ:CNXC) Shares 25% But It Can Do More

Published
NasdaqGS:CNXC

Concentrix Corporation (NASDAQ:CNXC) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 25% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 38% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 19x, you may still consider Concentrix as an attractive investment with its 14.2x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Concentrix could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Concentrix would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 32%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 50% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 23% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 15% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Concentrix's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Concentrix's P/E?

Despite Concentrix's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Concentrix's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
