Is Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies (NYSE:WAB) Using Too Much Debt?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation (NYSE:WAB) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies had US$4.16b in debt in March 2023; about the same as the year before. However, it does have US$410.0m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$3.75b.
A Look At Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies' Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies had liabilities of US$4.17b due within 12 months and liabilities of US$4.37b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had US$410.0m in cash and US$1.58b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling US$6.55b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

But truth be told we feel its net debt to EBITDA does undermine this impression a bit. Looking at all the aforementioned factors together, it strikes us that Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies can handle its debt fairly comfortably. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one.
