Textron Insiders Sell US$1.7m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
The fact that multiple Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Textron Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Independent Director, Kathleen Bader, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.0m worth of shares at a price of US$87.91 each. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$87.91, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was 76% of Kathleen Bader's holding.

Does Textron Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Textron insiders own about US$82m worth of shares. That equates to 0.5% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
