We feel now is a pretty good time to analyse Stem, Inc.'s (NYSE:STEM) business as it appears the company may be on the cusp of a considerable accomplishment. Stem, Inc. operates as an energy technology company in the United States. With the latest financial year loss of US$166m and a trailing-twelve-month loss of US$221m, the US$3.7b market-cap company amplified its loss by moving further away from its breakeven target. The most pressing concern for investors is Stem's path to profitability – when will it breakeven? In this article, we will touch on the expectations for the company's growth and when analysts expect it to become profitable.

Check out our latest analysis for Stem

Consensus from 4 of the American Electrical analysts is that Stem is on the verge of breakeven. They expect the company to post a final loss in 2022, before turning a profit of US$48m in 2023. The company is therefore projected to breakeven around 2 years from today. What rate will the company have to grow year-on-year in order to breakeven on this date? Using a line of best fit, we calculated an average annual growth rate of 69%, which is rather optimistic! If this rate turns out to be too aggressive, the company may become profitable much later than analysts predict.

We're not going to go through company-specific developments for Stem given that this is a high-level summary, though, take into account that generally a high forecast growth rate is not unusual for a company that is currently undergoing an investment period.

Before we wrap up, there’s one issue worth mentioning. Stem currently has negative equity on its balance sheet. This can sometimes arise from accounting methods used to deal with accumulated losses from prior years, which are viewed as liabilities carried forward until it cancels out in the future. Oftentimes, losses exist only on paper but other times, it can be a red flag.
