MSC Industrial Direct (NYSE:MSM) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To $0.87
MSC Industrial Direct Co., Inc.'s (NYSE:MSM) periodic dividend will be increasing on the 26th of November to $0.87, with investors receiving 2.4% more than last year's $0.85. This takes the dividend yield to 4.0%, which shareholders will be pleased with.
MSC Industrial Direct's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 96% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 72%. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 51.6% over the next year. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 68% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

MSC Industrial Direct Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.60, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $3.40. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.8% a year over that time. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. MSC Industrial Direct has seen earnings per share falling at 5.7% per year over the last five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think MSC Industrial Direct's payments are rock solid. The company has been bring in plenty of cash to cover the dividend, but we don't necessarily think that makes it a great dividend stock. We don't think MSC Industrial Direct is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
