Here's Why General Dynamics (NYSE:GD) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors
Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in General Dynamics (NYSE:GD). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide General Dynamics with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.
General Dynamics' Earnings Per Share Are Growing
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. We can see that in the last three years General Dynamics grew its EPS by 6.5% per year. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While we note General Dynamics achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 13% to US$48b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are General Dynamics Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since General Dynamics has a market capitalisation of US$74b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$483m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.7% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.
Does General Dynamics Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
As previously touched on, General Dynamics is a growing business, which is encouraging. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for General Dynamics you should know about.
