The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like AMETEK (NYSE:AME). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

AMETEK's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS) outcomes. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Impressively, AMETEK has grown EPS by 17% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EBIT margins for AMETEK remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 7.1% to US$6.7b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are AMETEK Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$39b company like AMETEK. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$155m. We note that this amounts to 0.4% of the company, which may be small owing to the sheer size of AMETEK but it's still worth mentioning. This should still be a great incentive for management to maximise shareholder value.

Is AMETEK Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that AMETEK has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in AMETEK's continuing strength. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research.
