With EPS Growth And More, Nextracker (NASDAQ:NXT) Makes An Interesting Case
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Nextracker (NASDAQ:NXT). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Nextracker's Improving Profits
Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. It is awe-striking that Nextracker's EPS went from US$0.025 to US$2.17 in just one year. Even though that growth rate may not be repeated, that looks like a breakout improvement. This could point to the business hitting a point of inflection.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The music to the ears of Nextracker shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 8.9% to 23% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Nextracker Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$8.4b company like Nextracker. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at US$22m. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 0.3% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Is Nextracker Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Nextracker's earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. This level of EPS growth does wonders for attracting investment, and the large insider investment in the company is just the cherry on top. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So at the surface level, Nextracker is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
