Even With A 35% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Matrix Service Company's (NASDAQ:MTRX) Performance Completely

Matrix Service Company (NASDAQ:MTRX) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 35% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 85%.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Matrix Service's P/S ratio of 0.5x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Construction industry in the United States is also close to 0.8x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Matrix Service Performed Recently?

Matrix Service could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Keen to find out how analysts think Matrix Service's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Matrix Service would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.9%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 3.6% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 16% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 8.8% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Matrix Service's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What Does Matrix Service's P/S Mean For Investors?

Matrix Service's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Looking at Matrix Service's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
