FGI Industries Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:FGI) Share Price Is Matching Sentiment Around Its Revenues
With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x FGI Industries Ltd. (NASDAQ:FGI) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Trade Distributors companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1x and even P/S higher than 3x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How FGI Industries Has Been Performing
FGI Industries hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as FGI Industries' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 35%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 12% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 2.0% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 4.9%.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that FGI Industries' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From FGI Industries' P/S?
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that FGI Industries' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for FGI Industries (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that you need to be mindful of.
