First US Bancshares' Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Before making this announcement, First US Bancshares was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 30.3% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 12% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
First US Bancshares Is Still Building Its Track Record
First US Bancshares' dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from US$0.04 to US$0.12. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 15% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. We are encouraged to see that First US Bancshares has grown earnings per share at 30% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
First US Bancshares Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is good to see that the dividend is staying consistent, and we don't think there is any reason to suspect this might change over the medium term. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for First US Bancshares that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
