Possible Bearish Signals With East West Bancorp Insiders Disposing Stock

The fact that multiple East West Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:EWBC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

East West Bancorp Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Vice Chairman & Chief Corporate Officer, Douglas Krause, sold US$1.3m worth of shares at a price of US$107 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$92.57. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

East West Bancorp Insiders Are Selling The Stock

Does East West Bancorp Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that East West Bancorp insiders own 1.0% of the company, worth about US$127m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
