Luminar Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:LAZR) Stocks Shoot Up 29% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable

Luminar Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:LAZR) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the last month did very little to improve the 84% share price decline over the last year.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Luminar Technologies is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.1x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Auto Components industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Luminar Technologies' Recent Performance Look Like?

Luminar Technologies hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Luminar Technologies?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Luminar Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.2%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 95% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 61% per year over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 19% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Luminar Technologies' P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Luminar Technologies shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Luminar Technologies maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Auto Components industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
