Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ:GNTX) Even After 27% Share Price Boost

Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ:GNTX) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 11% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Gentex may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.9x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 34x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Gentex could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Gentex's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Gentex would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 1.0%. Regardless, EPS has managed to lift by a handy 29% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 13% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 11% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Gentex's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From Gentex's P/E?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Gentex's P/E close to the market median. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

Our examination of Gentex's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

A lot of potential risks can sit within a company's balance sheet. Take a look at our free balance sheet analysis for Gentex with six simple checks on some of these key factors.
