U-Ming Marine Transport (TPE:2606) Has Compensated Shareholders With A Respectable 57% Return On Their Investment
If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation (TPE:2606) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 26% over five years, which is below the market return. Over the last twelve months the stock price has risen a very respectable 10.0%.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, U-Ming Marine Transport managed to grow its earnings per share at 3.5% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 5% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for U-Ming Marine Transport the TSR over the last 5 years was 57%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
U-Ming Marine Transport shareholders are up 17% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 9% per year over five year. This suggests the company might be improving over time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for U-Ming Marine Transport (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
