The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the Chief Telecom Inc. (GTSM:6561) share price has flown 124% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Chief Telecom was able to grow its EPS at 12% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 31% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Chief Telecom the TSR over the last 3 years was 143%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Chief Telecom shareholders have gained 75% (in total) over the last year. And yes, that does include the dividend. That gain actually surpasses the 34% TSR it generated (per year) over three years. Given the track record of solid returns over varying time frames, it might be worth putting Chief Telecom on your watchlist. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
