EZconn Corporation (TWSE:6442) just released a solid earnings report, and the stock displayed some strength. However, we think that shareholders should be cautious as we found some worrying factors underlying the profit.

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, EZconn issued 14% more new shares over the last year. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. You can see a chart of EZconn's EPS by clicking here.
How Is Dilution Impacting EZconn's Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
As you can see above, EZconn has been growing its net income over the last few years, with an annualized gain of 2,132% over three years. But EPS was only up 2,094% per year, in the exact same period. And over the last 12 months, the company grew its profit by 13%. But in comparison, EPS only increased by 12% over the same period. So you can see that the dilution has had a bit of an impact on shareholders.
Changes in the share price do tend to reflect changes in earnings per share, in the long run. So EZconn shareholders will want to see that EPS figure continue to increase. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

Our Take On EZconn's Profit Performance
Each EZconn share now gets a meaningfully smaller slice of its overall profit, due to dilution of existing shareholders. Because of this, we think that it may be that EZconn's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But the good news is that its EPS growth over the last three years has been very impressive. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. When we did our research, we found 2 warning signs for EZconn (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that we believe deserve your full attention.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of EZconn's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
