EZconn Corporation (TWSE:6442) Stock Rockets 96% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
The EZconn Corporation (TWSE:6442) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 96%. The last month tops off a massive increase of 193% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, EZconn's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 64.4x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 21x and even P/E's below 15x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
For example, consider that EZconn's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like EZconn's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 56%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 22% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it concerning that EZconn is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On EZconn's P/E
EZconn's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of EZconn revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
You need to take note of risks, for example - EZconn has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
