Sercomm Corporation's (TWSE:5388) Prospects Need A Boost To Lift Shares

When close to half the companies in Taiwan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 21x, you may consider Sercomm Corporation (TWSE:5388) as an attractive investment with its 11.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Sercomm certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Sercomm's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 16%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 123% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 8.0% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 24%, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that Sercomm is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Sercomm's P/E

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Sercomm maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
