AzureWave Technologies, Inc. (TWSE:3694) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 28% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough
AzureWave Technologies, Inc. (TWSE:3694) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 18% in the last year.
Since its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Taiwan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 23x, you may consider AzureWave Technologies as an attractive investment with its 15.9x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Earnings have risen firmly for AzureWave Technologies recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, AzureWave Technologies would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 12% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, lamentably EPS has fallen 8.7% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 23% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that AzureWave Technologies is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
AzureWave Technologies' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that AzureWave Technologies maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
