XAVi Technologies' (TWSE:3447) Earnings Offer More Than Meets The Eye
XAVi Technologies Corporation's (TWSE:3447) robust recent earnings didn't do much to move the stock. We believe that shareholders have noticed some concerning factors beyond the statutory profit numbers.

Zooming In On XAVi Technologies' Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
XAVi Technologies has an accrual ratio of -0.51 for the year to December 2024. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. In fact, it had free cash flow of NT$397m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of NT$92.8m. XAVi Technologies' free cash flow actually declined over the last year, which is disappointing, like non-biodegradable balloons. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Surprisingly, given XAVi Technologies' accrual ratio implied strong cash conversion, its paper profit was actually boosted by NT$9.4m in unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. We can see that XAVi Technologies' positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to December 2024. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On XAVi Technologies' Profit Performance
In conclusion, XAVi Technologies' accrual ratio suggests its statutory earnings are of good quality, but on the other hand the profits were boosted by unusual items. Based on these factors, it's hard to tell if XAVi Technologies' profits are a reasonable reflection of its underlying profitability. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing XAVi Technologies at this point in time.
