Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd. (TWSE:2385) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 12th of July to NT$7.80. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 4.1%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Chicony Electronics' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. The last payment made up 73% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 45.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 53% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Chicony Electronics Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from NT$4.49 total annually to NT$7.80. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 5.7% over that duration. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.

Chicony Electronics Could Grow Its Dividend

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Chicony Electronics has impressed us by growing EPS at 9.6% per year over the past five years. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

Chicony Electronics Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
