AAEON Technology's (TPE:6579) Shareholders Are Down 22% On Their Shares
In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term AAEON Technology Inc. (TPE:6579) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 22% in three years, versus a market return of about 54%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the three years that the share price fell, AAEON Technology's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 8.7% each year. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 8% per year. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. In this case, it seems that the EPS is guiding the share price.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of AAEON Technology, it has a TSR of -9.5% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
AAEON Technology produced a TSR of 3.9% over the last year. It's always nice to make money but this return falls short of the market return which was about 39% for the year. On the bright side, that's certainly better than the yearly loss of about 3.1% endured over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. We hope the turnaround in fortunes continues. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
