Read This Before Buying Flytech Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:6206) For Its Dividend

Dividend paying stocks like Flytech Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:6206) tend to be popular with investors, and for good reason - some research suggests a significant amount of all stock market returns come from reinvested dividends. Yet sometimes, investors buy a popular dividend stock because of its yield, and then lose money if the company's dividend doesn't live up to expectations.

With Flytech Technology yielding 6.0% and having paid a dividend for over 10 years, many investors likely find the company quite interesting. We'd guess that plenty of investors have purchased it for the income. When buying stocks for their dividends, you should always run through the checks below, to see if the dividend looks sustainable.

Payout ratios

Dividends are usually paid out of company earnings. If a company is paying more than it earns, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. As a result, we should always investigate whether a company can afford its dividend, measured as a percentage of a company's net income after tax. Looking at the data, we can see that 97% of Flytech Technology's profits were paid out as dividends in the last 12 months. Its payout ratio is quite high, and the dividend is not well covered by earnings. If earnings are growing or the company has a large cash balance, this might be sustainable - still, we think it is a concern.

In addition to comparing dividends against profits, we should inspect whether the company generated enough cash to pay its dividend. Flytech Technology paid out 66% of its free cash flow last year, which is acceptable, but is starting to limit the amount of earnings that can be reinvested into the business. While the dividend was not well covered by profits, at least they were covered by free cash flow. Even so, if the company were to continue paying out almost all of its profits, we'd be concerned about whether the dividend is sustainable in a downturn.

With a strong net cash balance, Flytech Technology investors may not have much to worry about in the near term from a dividend perspective.

Dividend Volatility

From the perspective of an income investor who wants to earn dividends for many years, there is not much point buying a stock if its dividend is regularly cut or is not reliable. For the purpose of this article, we only scrutinise the last decade of Flytech Technology's dividend payments. The dividend has been stable over the past 10 years, which is great. We think this could suggest some resilience to the business and its dividends. During the past 10-year period, the first annual payment was NT$2.9 in 2011, compared to NT$4.0 last year. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.1% a year over that time.

Slow and steady dividend growth might not sound that exciting, but dividends have been stable for ten years, which we think is seriously impressive.

Dividend Growth Potential

While dividend payments have been relatively reliable, it would also be nice if earnings per share (EPS) were growing, as this is essential to maintaining the dividend's purchasing power over the long term. Flytech Technology's earnings per share have shrunk at 10% a year over the past five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective, as even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough.

Conclusion

When we look at a dividend stock, we need to form a judgement on whether the dividend will grow, if the company is able to maintain it in a wide range of economic circumstances, and if the dividend payout is sustainable. We're not keen on the fact that Flytech Technology paid out such a high percentage of its income, although its cashflow is in better shape. Moreover, earnings have been shrinking. While the dividends have been fairly steady, we'd wonder for how much longer this will be sustainable if earnings continue to decline. In summary, Flytech Technology has a number of shortcomings that we'd find it hard to get past. Things could change, but we think there are a number of better ideas out there.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Flytech Technology (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.

You’ve overlooked the activist investor factor. Travis Cocke’s Voss has announced 5% ownership through a 13G filing. They’ve added to that 5% since, and in doing so, have created a structural trap door for 27.42 Million Shares actively sold short. Chuck will announce lots of positives on July 29 but it’s what Voss announces shortly after that will rock the overextended Teledoc shorts. The Walmart partnership is the tip of the iceberg. The market is missing the sheer regulatory and enterprise friction of modern corporate healthcare. Teladoc isn't a "consumer app"; it is the primary digital infrastructure integrated directly into the legacy backends of Tier-1 insurance companies and fortune 500 employers, covering 105 million+ lives. Teladoc is acting as the digital top-of-funnel engine for the world's largest retailer. If Voss pushes the narrative that Teladoc is effectively the outsourced digital brain of Walmart's entire healthcare footprint, the fair value shifts from a basic health multiple to an enterprise distribution premium. Additionally , we are in a structural gold rush for high-quality, legally compliant, longitudinal medical data to train vertical healthcare AI models. Large technology hyperscalers and pharmaceutical giants cannot simply scrape the internet for this; they need structured clinical inputs. Teladoc sits on one of the largest de-identified virtual medical datasets on earth. From the activist playbook , we’ll see Voss demand the immediate creation of a Data & Diagnostics Licensing Division, transforming a legacy liability into an incredibly high-margin, pure-software data asset that requires zero human clinician hours to scale. Chuck is doing great work and deserves credi5 for the Teledoc turnaround but it will be Travis Cocke who will be responsible for a share price way beyond your $15 valuation.
