Did You Participate In Any Of Jochu Technology's (TPE:3543) Fantastic 251% Return ?
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Jochu Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:3543) share price has soared 183% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. On top of that, the share price is up 46% in about a quarter.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Jochu Technology's earnings per share are down 31% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
The revenue reduction of 11% per year is not a positive. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Jochu Technology's TSR for the last 5 years was 251%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Jochu Technology shareholders gained a total return of 19% during the year. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 29% over five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Jochu Technology better, we need to consider many other factors.
