Shareholders Of YFC-Boneagle Electric (GTSM:6220) Must Be Happy With Their 130% Total Return
The main point of investing for the long term is to make money. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But YFC-Boneagle Electric Co., Ltd. (GTSM:6220) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 78% over five years, which is below the market return. However, if you include the dividends then the return is market beating. Over the last twelve months the stock price has risen a very respectable 20%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, YFC-Boneagle Electric managed to grow its earnings per share at 3.8% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 12% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of YFC-Boneagle Electric, it has a TSR of 130% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
YFC-Boneagle Electric shareholders gained a total return of 24% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 18% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
