Team Group Inc.'s (TWSE:4967) Share Price Boosted 38% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Despite an already strong run, Team Group Inc. (TWSE:4967) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 38% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 99% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Team Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Semiconductor industry in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.9x and even P/S above 8x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Team Group Performed Recently?
Team Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think the company's revenue is going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Team Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 173% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 129% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 10% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 26%.
In light of this, it's understandable that Team Group's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Team Group's P/S?
Shares in Team Group have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Team Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Team Group's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
