How Much Did Feedback Technology's(GTSM:8091) Shareholders Earn From Share Price Movements Over The Last Three Years?
Feedback Technology Corp. (GTSM:8091) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 13% in the last month. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. After all, the share price is down 44% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, Feedback Technology's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 30% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 17% compound annual share price fall. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Feedback Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was -31%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Feedback Technology provided a TSR of 25% over the year (including dividends). That's fairly close to the broader market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 1.3%. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
