Investors Who Bought Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery (GTSM:6654) Shares A Year Ago Are Now Up 29%
On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. For example, the Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery Co., Ltd. (GTSM:6654), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 29% trails the market return. The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 3.5% higher than it was three years ago.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year.
When a company has just transitioned to profitability, earnings per share growth is not always the best way to look at the share price action.
We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.6% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Unfortunately Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery's fell 22% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery's TSR for the last year was 31%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Over the last year Tian Zheng International Precision Machinery shareholders have received a TSR of 31%. It's always nice to make money but this return falls short of the market return which was about 39% for the year. On the bright side that gain is actually better than the average return of 5% over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. If the business can justify the share price gain with improving fundamental data, then there could be more gains to come. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
