If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. But Cashbox Partyworld Co., Ltd. (GTSM:8359) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 69% over five years, which is below the market return. Unfortunately the share price is down 20% in the last year.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Cashbox Partyworld's earnings per share are down 7.6% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

The revenue reduction of 1.3% per year is not a positive. It certainly surprises us that the share price is up, but perhaps a closer examination of the data will yield answers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Cashbox Partyworld's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Cashbox Partyworld shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 126%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Cashbox Partyworld shareholders are down 15% for the year, but the market itself is up 38%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 18%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Cashbox Partyworld has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
