Evergreen Steel's (TWSE:2211) Dividend Will Be Increased To NT$6.50
Evergreen Steel Corp. (TWSE:2211) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of August to NT$6.50. This takes the annual payment to 4.6% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Evergreen Steel's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Before making this announcement, Evergreen Steel was paying out quite a large proportion of both earnings and cash flow, with the dividend being 125% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 29.2% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 69%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Evergreen Steel Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 4 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was NT$2.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of NT$6.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 34% over that duration. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. We are encouraged to see that Evergreen Steel has grown earnings per share at 29% per year over the past five years. EPS is growing rapidly, although the company is also paying out a large portion of its profits as dividends. If earnings keep growing, the dividend may be sustainable, but generally we'd prefer to see a fast growing company reinvest in further growth.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Evergreen Steel's payments are rock solid. While Evergreen Steel is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
