Should You Be Impressed By DaBomb Protein's (GTSM:6578) Returns on Capital?
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at DaBomb Protein (GTSM:6578), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on DaBomb Protein is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.018 = NT$14m ÷ (NT$1.0b - NT$235m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
Thus, DaBomb Protein has an ROCE of 1.8%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Personal Products industry average of 14%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
When we looked at the ROCE trend at DaBomb Protein, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 12% over the last five years. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. This could mean that the business is losing its competitive advantage or market share, because while more money is being put into ventures, it's actually producing a lower return - "less bang for their buck" per se.
What We Can Learn From DaBomb Protein's ROCE
We're a bit apprehensive about DaBomb Protein because despite more capital being deployed in the business, returns on that capital and sales have both fallen. Long term shareholders who've owned the stock over the last three years have experienced a 16% depreciation in their investment, so it appears the market might not like these trends either. Unless there is a shift to a more positive trajectory in these metrics, we would look elsewhere.
