Altek Corporation's (TWSE:3059) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to NT$0.70 on the 18th of October. Based on this payment, the dividend yield will be 2.0%, which is lower than the average for the industry.

Altek's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Based on the last payment, Altek was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 18.5% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 45% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Altek's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Looking back, Altek's dividend hasn't been particularly consistent. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from NT$1.00 total annually to NT$0.70. The dividend has shrunk at around 3.9% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Altek has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 19% per annum. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.

We Really Like Altek's Dividend

In general, we don't like to see the dividend being cut, especially when the company has such high potential like Altek does. The cut will allow the company to continue paying out the dividend without putting the balance sheet under pressure, which means that it could remain sustainable for longer. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
