Nien Hsing Textile (TWSE:1451) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year
Nien Hsing Textile Co., Ltd.'s (TWSE:1451) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to NT$0.5016 on the 2nd of August. This payment takes the dividend yield to 2.4%, which only provides a modest boost to overall returns.

Nien Hsing Textile Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. While Nien Hsing Textile is not profitable, it is paying out less than 75% of its free cash flow, which means that there is plenty left over for reinvestment into the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Over the next year, EPS might fall by 2.1% based on recent performance. While this means that the company will be unprofitable, we generally believe cash flows are more important, and the current cash payout ratio is quite healthy, which gives us comfort.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from NT$4.04 total annually to NT$0.50. This works out to a decline of approximately 88% over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. It's not great to see that Nien Hsing Textile's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 2.1% per year over the past five years. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Nien Hsing Textile is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
