Is Tung Ho Textile's (TPE:1414) Share Price Gain Of 127% Well Earned?
Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Tung Ho Textile Co., Ltd. (TPE:1414) share price has soared 127% in the last year. Most would be very happy with that, especially in just one year! The last week saw the share price soften some 2.0%. It is also impressive that the stock is up 65% over three years, adding to the sense that it is a real winner.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Tung Ho Textile went from making a loss to reporting a profit, in the last year.
When a company is just on the edge of profitability it can be well worth considering other metrics in order to more precisely gauge growth (and therefore understand share price movements).
We are skeptical of the suggestion that the 1.6% dividend yield would entice buyers to the stock. Unfortunately Tung Ho Textile's fell 22% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Tung Ho Textile, it has a TSR of 134% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Tung Ho Textile shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 134% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 18% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Tung Ho Textile better, we need to consider many other factors.
