Shareholders Of Global PMX (TPE:4551) Must Be Happy With Their 214% Total Return
When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. One great example is Global PMX Co., Ltd. (TPE:4551) which saw its share price drive 174% higher over five years. It's also up 13% in about a month. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 10% in the last thirty days.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, Global PMX managed to grow its earnings per share at 6.4% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 22% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Global PMX the TSR over the last 5 years was 214%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Global PMX shareholders are up 7.0% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 26% a year, over half a decade) look better. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Global PMX , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
