China Everbright Water (SGX:U9E) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
China Everbright Water Limited (SGX:U9E) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to HK$0.0098 on the 9th of September. The dividend yield of 7.9% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

China Everbright Water's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, China Everbright Water's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 20.3% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 5.7%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
China Everbright Water Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
It is great to see that China Everbright Water has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of HK$0.0187 in 2016 to the most recent total annual payment of HK$0.126. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 37% over that duration. China Everbright Water has been growing its dividend quite rapidly, which is exciting. However, the short payment history makes us question whether this performance will persist across a full market cycle.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. We are encouraged to see that China Everbright Water has grown earnings per share at 20% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.
In Summary
Overall, it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, but this might be explained by the payments being a bit high previously. While China Everbright Water is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
