Sembcorp Industries' (SGX:U96) 51% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same five-year period
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX:U96) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 250% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 13% gain in the last three months.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Sembcorp Industries managed to grow its earnings per share at 31% a year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 28% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
We know that Sembcorp Industries has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? If you are thinking of buying or selling Sembcorp Industries stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Sembcorp Industries, it has a TSR of 694% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Sembcorp Industries has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 43% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 51% a year, is even better. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Sembcorp Industries has 2 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
