mDR Limited's (SGX:Y3D) 27% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

mDR Limited (SGX:Y3D) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 39% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about mDR's P/S ratio of 0.1x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Electronic industry in Singapore is also close to 0.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does mDR's Recent Performance Look Like?

mDR has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for mDR, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is mDR's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, mDR would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 7.6%. The latest three year period has also seen a 23% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 22% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it interesting that mDR is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On mDR's P/S

Following mDR's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that mDR's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.
