The board of Ban Leong Technologies Limited (SGX:B26) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 16th of August, with investors receiving SGD0.016 per share. The dividend yield of 6.9% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Ban Leong Technologies' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Ban Leong Technologies was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 17.1% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 32% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of SGD0.011 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of SGD0.0235. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.9% a year over that time. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Ban Leong Technologies might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Ban Leong Technologies has impressed us by growing EPS at 17% per year over the past five years. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.

Ban Leong Technologies Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In general, we don't like to see the dividend being cut, especially when the company has such high potential like Ban Leong Technologies does. By reducing the dividend, pressure will be taken off the balance sheet, which could help the dividend to be consistent in the future. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
