Aztech Global (SGX:8AZ) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year
Aztech Global Ltd.'s (SGX:8AZ) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to SGD0.015 on the 17th of May. However, the dividend yield of 5.6% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Aztech Global's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Aztech Global's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 82.4% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 28% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Aztech Global's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, the company hasn't been paying the most consistent dividend, but with such a short dividend history it could be too early to draw solid conclusions. Since 2021, the annual payment back then was SGD0.02, compared to the most recent full-year payment of SGD0.045. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 50% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Earnings have grown at around 4.5% a year for the past three years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. Growth of 4.5% per annum is not particularly high, which might explain why the company is paying out a higher proportion of earnings. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.
Our Thoughts On Aztech Global's Dividend
Overall, while it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, we think the company is now in a good position to make consistent payments going into the future. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
