Pharmesis International Up 36%, Insiders Still Down After CN¥2.19t Purchase

Published
SGX:BFK

Insiders who bought CN¥2.19t worth of Pharmesis International Ltd. (SGX:BFK) stock in the last year have seen some of their losses recouped as the stock gained 36% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at CN¥2.2t since the time of purchase.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Pharmesis International

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Yang Fei bought S$2.2t worth of shares at a price of S$533,000 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than S$0.11 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Yang Fei.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Pharmesis International insiders own 48% of the company, currently worth about S$1.7m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Pharmesis International Insiders?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But on the other hand, the company made a loss during the last year, which makes us a little cautious. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Pharmesis International insiders are well aligned, and quite possibly think the share price is too low. Looks promising!
